Maria Connor reveals a previously undisclosed appreciation of The Rolling Stones when she wears a T-shirt bearing the words ‘Get off my cloud’. With the addition of an ‘of’, the Jagger and Richards song was the follow-up single to (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction in 1965.
At Roy’s Rolls, Lauren Bolton correctly observes that chess-lover Roy Cropper isn’t the type to be passionate about tiddlywinks. But maybe he should be. Contrary to its reputation as a simplistic pursuit, devotees argue that the modern version of tiddlywinks is a game of strategy and dexterity, with a sizeable fanbase in elite universities. Things are quiet at The Rovers. So quiet, in fact, Glenda Shuttleworth likens it to a date with French mime artist Marcel Marceau.
Billy Mayhew is appreciative of Summer Spellman’s help with everything he’s going through. If someone made a film about their lives called One Woman And Three Babies, he tells her, she would be cast in the parental role. Meanwhile, another member of the family, Bernie Winter, has cast herself as a peacemaker. When she witnesses the ongoing feud between Daisy Midgeley and Bethany Platt, Bernie offers some advice. ‘Give peace a chance,’ she says. John Lennon and Yoko One would be proud. Coincidentally, John Lennon is also the name for a shot in tiddlywinks. After collapsing at school, Sam is getting checked out at Weatherfield General. Roy says he knew something was wrong because, while playing chess, Sam moved his bishop as if it were a knight. It’s good to see Roy’s first-aid training is still coming in handy.
