We often hear tales of young Bernie Winter’s hedonistic nights at Manchester’s legendary Hacienda club, but now it’s Beth Sutherland’s turn to hark back to her youth spent in one of the city’s most famous music venues. Having put in a long stint making counterfeit designer gear at Underworld, she recalls how she often pulled all-nighters at Jilly’s Rockworld. The club opened in 1970 and saw early performances by the likes of Joy Division and Depeche Mode. It closed its doors in 2010. Speaking of Bernie, when she lays eyes on a glammed-up Summer Spellman she asks: ‘Who gave Sandra Dee a makeover?’ It’s unclear whether Summer knows the American actress was a teen star in the Fifties and a byword for clean-cut behaviour.

Joel Deering ticks off yet another box on his shithousery list by poisoning pregnant Lauren Bolton. To rub salt into the wound, he plays the song Lovers In A Past Life by Calvin Harris and Rag’N’Bone Man as he exits her flat. Meanwhile, Tyrone Dobbs tells his wife Fiz about Jack Webster being charged with arson. ‘He’s hardly a twisted firestarter,’ she says, defending the teen with reference to Prodigy’s incendiary 1996 masterpiece. As for poor Lauren, after being rescued in the nick of time she gives birth to a baby boy. Max Turner is at her bedside in the hospital. He’s overwhelmed by her strength and bravery. ‘You were like Superwoman,’ he says. Enter Joel, who’s like a twisted Lex Luthor with more hair.
