Amy Barlow has an essay deadline, so she’s envious of Nina Lucas and Asha Alahan when she sees them heading for lunch at the Chariot Square Hotel. Amy has to make do with toast instead. Nina offers her some advice, courtesy of The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy author Douglas Adams: ‘I love deadlines. I love the whooshing sound as they fly by.’ Amy says her life will be ruined if this deadline whooshes by, so she’s going to keep her nose to the grindstone. She could also take succour from another thing Adams wrote: ‘Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so.’

Over their posh-pancakes lunch, Nina and Asha make their plans for the day. They include a gallery visit and a trip to the People’s History Museum. The Manchester museum tells the story of British democracy. And we see democracy in action back at the cobbles, when Paul Foreman’s friends and family all vote to make the most of the time they have left together.
