Bernie Winter is trying to pick out the best outfit for her court appearance. She thinks wearing the judge’s favourite colour could work some Derren Brown-style mind trickery and get her a shorter jail term. At No 9, Cassie Plummer likens her son Tyrone Dobbs to the Christmas-hating Grinch when he suggests it’s a bit early for the decorations to go up. No one knows whether the judge sentencing Bernie is a fan of Christmas, but she makes sure Bernie’s festive season will be filled with misery when she puts her behind bars for three months.
While sitting with Daisy Midgeley at Roy’s Rolls, Daniel Osbourne has his head buried in a book. This would normally be the height of rudeness, but a phone-scrolling Daisy is similarly preoccupied as she searches for a job. Daniel’s book of choice is Tokyo Express, an intricately-plotted 1958 crime novel by Seichō Matsumoto. Meanwhile, as things continue to go from very bad to much worse for Gemma Winter-Brown, the person plotting her calamitous life recently can only be the misanthropic Grinch.
