Like Star Wars, the undertaking business has a dark side. Eileen Grimshaw accuses George Shuttleworth of leading her son Todd into that shadowy realm with his tales of having fun chats with dead bodies while he’s embalming them. Nina Lucas isn’t usually the person to lead the narrative away from gothic concerns, but at Roy’s Rolls she engages in far cosier conversation when she tells Ruby Dobbs how desperate she is to see the film The Little Mermaid. Later, following his formative dealings with embalming corpses, Todd complains to his mum that all he can see in his head is dead people. He’s a bit like Haley Joel Osment’s character Cole in The Sixth Sense, with the addition that the job has put him off visiting Frescho’s cold meat counter anytime soon.
