Inspired by a centuries-old proverb, American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote in 1839: ‘The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.’ Almost 200 years later, the phrase describing inherited behaviour is recast by Bernie Winter as: ‘The apple doesn’t fall far from the old whatsit.’ At Underworld, Stephen discusses cheaper packaging options and Izzy Armstrong suggests that ‘Captain Kirk’ – aka packer and driver Kirk Sutherland – will want to have a say in the matter. Some of the Underworld staff later decamp to The Rovers, where Carla Barlow starts to feel the effects of an LSD-spiked drink she was given by low-life murderer Stephen Reid. Poor Carla may well be imagining she’s seated on the bridge of the USS Enterprise, hurtling across the universe at warp speed. Crisps get handed out by Sean Tully, although none of them are Wotsits.

Brian Packham is temporarily lodging with Amy Barlow, Summer Spellman and Aaron Sandford. When some of the trio’s student friends come round for a drink, Brian confuses everyone by mentioning the news agency Reuters. After sucking the life out of the party with talk of studying and charades, the self-styled B-Dog refers to the Bayeux Tapestry. The tapestry recorded the events of the Norman Conquest, much like an 11th Century news agency.
