Dee-Dee Bailey shares some etymological knowledge with Joel Deering when she tells him about the origins of the word ‘fiancé’. She explains it comes from the Latin word ‘fidare’, which means ‘to trust’. Joel teases that Dee-Dee knows a little bit of Latin and now she thinks she’s the Roman statesman and philosopher Cicero. A knowledge of Latin isn’t required to become a lawyer like Dee-Dee and Joel, despite Peter Cook’s classic joke about failing to be a judge because he ‘didn’t have the Latin’.

Glenda Shuttleworth does a spot of amateur lawyering when she tries to reach a deal with her brother George over his business. She offers to let him keep Shuttleworth’s Independent Funeral Services, while she takes possession of his house. George rejects the idea, arguing that he doesn’t want to give his house away because life isn’t a game of Monopoly. Amy Barlow’s mum Tracy needs her to work at Preston’s Petals. Amy complains that she already has a job at Viaduct Bistro, which leads her dad Steve McDonald to observe she has more work uniforms than Mr Benn. Amy has no idea who her dad is talking about. She wasn’t even born when repeats of the the show about an animated adventurer were last broadcast.

Copper Kit Green pays a visit to the shoe shop where Gemma Winter-Brown was caught shoplifting. He tells owner Bruce Ruskin he’s looking for a pair of desert boots, like the ones Steve McQueen wore when he raced around San Francisco in the 1968 film Bullitt. Kit will have a very bumpy ride if he attempts the same thing on the cobbles. On the other side of the law, Glenda nicks a set of keys and takes possession of her dad’s house. Her brother George is appalled by her dumping a load of Shuttleworth family heirlooms at Eileen Grimshaw’s place ‘This stuff, to me, is like the contents of Tutankhamen’s tomb,’ he rages. One particularly prized item is an undertaking award won by the warring siblings’ dad Archie. It’s called a Cremmy, which George fancifully likens to a music industry Grammy.
