David Platt wonders if he might be witnessing a miracle when he finds Max Turner up bright and early, getting ready to go out and face the day. Unfortunately, Max isn’t heading off to college. He’s going to meet his girlfriend, Sabrina Adetiba. David asks if they’re just going to ‘bum around all day, like John and Yoko?’ That’s a hash interpretation of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s 1969 bed-ins for peace, but Max doesn’t take offence on their part because he doesn’t know who they are. When David wants to know what efforts he’s made to pursue his interest in filmmaking, Max sarcastically says he’ll send Oscar-nominated director Christopher Nolan his CV.

While Nolan has made films about DC Comics characters, Eliza Woodrow is more of a Marvel Comics fan. She tells her granddad Stu Carpenter there have been 32 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, and her dad Dom Everett has said she can watch one of them every time she visits him. Dom believes the movies need to be viewed in chronological order, rather than date of release, in order to grasp all the intricacies of the Marvel multiverse. Stu resurrects the ghost of censorious, self-appointed moral guardian Mary Whitehouse by condemning films he hasn’t even watched as being too violent for his granddaughter’s sensitive eyes, but thankfully Eliza is all over the British Board of Film Classification’s guidelines and informs him they’re only rated 12. Never mind unmotivated loser Max, perhaps Eliza is the one who should be sending her CV to Christopher Nolan. Later, Stu tries to make amends by giving Eliza an A-Z of superheroes he found in a charity shop.

Tyrone Dobbs vents his anger at his mum Cassie Plummer in a kids’ playground, which draws disapproving looks from a parent. ‘You don’t get this on CBeebies, do you?’ jokes Abi Webster, in an attempt to make light of the situation. Tyrone also blames Evelyn Plummer for throwing Cassie out of the family home when she was 16 and causing her to turn to prostitution. He tells Abi she’ll know when Evelyn is around because of the flying monkeys. He’s referencing the winged monkeys owned by the Wicked Witch Of The West from The Wizard Of Oz. Indeed, if there’s a companion volume of the superhero A-Z dedicated to supervillains, Tyrone will definitely deem Evelyn worthy of inclusion. Hope and Ruby look surprised when they see Cassie has moved back in with them. ‘Whatever I said, whatever I did, I didn’t mean it,’ she tells them, quoting Back For Good by Take That. It remains to be seen if Cassie is back for good at No 9, but the girls are still very happy to see her.

At The Rovers, Ronnie Bailey tells Glenda Shuttleworth the Germans have a word for a man who sits down to pee (sitzpinkler). What a shame David isn’t present, because he would be witness to a genuine miracle when Glenda is lost for words. At Viaduct Bistro, Dev boasts to his business buddy Darren Vance that he’s been compared with Tiger Woods. Darren undermines the wild claim by enquiring if that means Dev has also been chased out of his house by someone brandishing a nine iron, as Woods was in 2009 by his then wife Elin Nordegren. While Dev is self-aggrandising, Courtney Vance takes the opportunity to tell Aadi Alahan that she’s impressed by him not making the mistake she did at his age, saddling herself with debt to pay for ‘media studies at the University of Rod Hull and Emu’. The raffia puppet-wrangling Aussie comedian and Oscar Wilde can’t have been mentioned too many times in the same breath, but Courtney achieves the feat by quoting a line from Wilde’s 1892 play Lady Windermere’s Fan. ‘I can resist everything except temptation,’ she says, summing up her character.

Stu is watching an unspecified superhero movie with Alya Nazir and Eliza. He has to pause it during a touching moment, recalling that he’’s still haunted by some of the emotional scenes in Toy Story 3. After previously condemning an entire movie genre without watching it, it’s big of Stu to eat his words. Meanwhile, Evelyn is less magnanimous as she says she won’t believe her daughter Cassie until ‘Nelson gets his eye back’. Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) never actually lost an eye, but he did lose his right arm. With Evelyn deciding to leave, not to mention Hope and Ruby getting upset, Tyrone would give his right arm right now to put an end to all this drama.
