Kevin Webster fails in his attempt to keep his wife Abi in the dark about Corey Brent. While listening to the radio, she hears that the youth who killed her son Seb is appearing in a streaming documentary. She’s justifiably disgusted by the news and suggests the show about a prison football team should be called Manslaughter United. At Street Cars, Tim Metcalfe and Steve McDonald vow not to organise any more dinner parties. Neither of them enjoyed Sally Metcalfe acting like a middle-class Frankenstein’s monster, made from bolted together cliches about mezze platters and home extensions. Steve calls her ‘Kirstie Allsopp’, which cuts deeper than a wound caused by slicing avocados with a knife from Jamie Oliver’s Tefal range.
Bernie Winter tells Dev Alahan she’s being persecuted by the police. He isn’t too sure, since he believes Weatherfield is ‘more Trumpton than Compton’. Trumpton’s agent of law enforcement was PC Potter and, adding some weight to Dev’s theory, he was never the subject of a scathing attack in song by NWA. Bernie takes up the issue at Weatherfield Police Station, where she tells the duty officer her battle with the law goes way back. She explains she was a member of the Women For Life On Earth group at Greenham Common. The real-life Welsh group went to the Berkshire RAF base in 1981, instigating a 19-year protest against the storage of Cruise missiles on British soil.
Nina Lucas and Abi experience the world of gutter television when they visit the offices of Plaza Twelve Productions. They tell smug exec Jasmine Readman how hurtful and exploitative the prison documentary is, but their words fall on deaf ears. The exec threatens to call the police and Abi calls her a coward. To be fair, Jasmine is less a coward and more lowlife scum (which may well be the name of another show her company has on its streaming service).
Coronation Street episode 11270/11271. Originally aired 20th May 2024.
